Why Havanese?

The decision of which dog breed to choose for you and your family is an important one. People often like to believe that the behavior of an adult dog is "all in how you raise them" - but the fact is that genetics matter. It is important to choose a dog breed that fits your lifestyle and activity level.

Havanese are active, sturdy little dogs that love human companionship. My Havanese are on the smaller end of the size range for the breed, and they will mature between 8-14 pounds. Although they are small, they are not fragile! They love to swim, chase the goats, play fetch, and explore. They are smart and easy to train, and they are very affectionate. They are happy to go for walks and play, but also love to relax. They don't have the nervous temperaments of some little dogs, and they are typically great with kids. Especially as puppies, they will need walks or playtime daily. As adults, they appreciate a daily walk but they won't be bouncing off the walls if you have to skip their exercise.

Havanese have hair, not fur, so they don't shed. Their hair will grow until you cut it, like human hair. Some people call these types of dogs "hypoallergenic", because people that are allergic to dog fur won't be allergic to Havanese. However, it's important to remember that some people are allergic to a dog's skin cells and in those cases, they'll still be allergic to Havanese. If you are wondering about allergies, feel free to come visit and see how you do!

Since their hair doesn't shed, Havanese need regular haircuts. I typically cut my dogs' hair about every 3-4 months. You can do it yourself with scissors or clippers, or you can take them to a groomer.
